Minster Refectory

The Refectory occupies a fantastic location inside Southwell Minster grounds, with magnificent views that can be enjoyed on our patio area. Indoor seating also available. An ideal spot to enjoy one of our scrumptious cakes and a pot of tea.

Our ethos is to serve seasonal, good quality, locally sourced food where possible. From light bites to daily specials, fresh bean to cup coffee to our carefully selected wine menu. We hope you will find something to suit!

We also have a selection of vegetarian and gluten-free options available daily.

The Refectory is available to hire in the evenings for events and also specialises in Outside Catering to suit all occasions. Please contact us for more details on the tailored services we can offer.

Our Story

The Refectory at Southwell has been operated under a franchise for the Dean and Chapter for over 20 years by the Griffin family. Originally in 1989, the Refectory was just a room under the Great Hall and Jane and Geoff Griffin began to build the business there. Little did they expect their tea room to blossom into what it is today.

In 1996, when the current building was purpose built for the Refectory and Bookshop, Dwight their son and qualified chef, joined the business and helped to push things forwards. Now, several years later, Dwight and his wife Katie have taken over the running of The Refectory and in April 2014 reopened after a major refurbishment.

The Cathedral Shop at Southwell Minster serves as a point of contact, welcome and ministry for visitors to the Minster and to the town of Southwell. It is situated on Church Street and staffed by customer service volunteers.

There is a focus on selling items which are from the UK as well as ethically traded gifts. The shop sells many locally produced items, with gifts including Nottingham Lace, local pottery, Nottingham knitted and hand finished scarves. It also stocks a good selection of local books on the history of Southwell and the surrounding villages.

Many of the gifts are associated with the carvings and decoration in the Minster, such as the Chapter House 'Leaves of Southwell' and the carvings of mice. You can also purchase a range of choral and organ CDs, hymn books and musical gifts, which draw on the musical heritage of the Minster.

The shop aims to serve the wider Church community by providing a range of specifically Christian goods, such as rosaries, crosses and specialist cards (e.g. Baptism, Ordination) as well as Christian books from publishers including SPCK, Church House Publishing and Norwich Books. Parishes may purchase candles, communion wine and wafers.
