St. Nicolas specializes in bespoke hanging decorations. All our decorations are
handmade, and the time taken to make each one is reflected in their unique
quality.

For over 30 years we have worked with a small Christian charity in Thailand that
helps disadvantaged rural women find work in their community, rather than
having to leave home. Today, some 300 skilled women work at home hand sewing
our decorations, and many of them have been doing so for more than 10 years. All
our historical figure decorations are made in this way as well as numerous other
designs.
St. Nicolas is proud to be a member of BAFTS (British Association of Fair Trade
Suppliers) and supports the 10 Principles of Fair Trade, as set out by the World
Fair Trade Organisation.

As the business grew, so more innovative designs were needed and in 1999 we
began working with an Indian partner. Our Indian embroidered hanging
decorations are handmade using the traditional method of zardozi embroidery.
Zari – meaning gold – embroidery originated in Persia and reached India in the 12th
century. It is a highly skilled embroidery technique that traditionally used gold
wires and jewels to embellish courtly robes. Zardozi work is now a rare and
respected craft, the skills of which, with your support, continue to be handed down
from generation to generation. Zari-work is now officially recognized as one of the
‘Ancient Handicrafts’ by the Government of India.

St. Nicolas has been supporting the same family-run business in Northern India for
over 20 years, and this long-term relationship means that we can supply unique
handmade designs at competitive prices, without compromising the welfare of our
artisans.
