The Bug Hotel Story
Our unique social enterprise in Southwell, Nottinghamshire offers people with learning disabilities the opportunity to enrich their lives through horticulture. The flowers we cultivate and products we make are bought by local people, brightening up homes, businesses and celebrations throughout the community.
During Coronavirus we have not been able to welcome volunteers to work directly with clients but brilliantly, they have continued to support us.
One of our local volunteers Brian, has made bug house cases from upcycled pallet wood at home. To thank Brian, we give him a bouquet of our seasonal flowers when we collect the boxes. Brian gives the flowers to his neighbour to thank her for supporting him during these exceptional and challenging times.
The bug hotels are filled by clients at Flower Pod Southwell or volunteers working remotely, with dried plant material from our garden, or foraged when we go for a walk in the beautiful surrounding countryside.
Everyone who wants to, takes part. Tom, one of our clients loves to sand the cases and sees his role as an important one, “It’s like a job for me, and I’m doing my bit to help the charity. I’d be bored and depressed at home all the time, coming to Reach really makes me feel good”.
Instructions for your Bug Hotel
Each bug house is unique in finish and fillers but they are all charming.
Your insect hotel needs to be popped in a sheltered, quiet part of the garden, out of the wind. It will be okay in a shady place as many insects like damp conditions. A sunny spot will help to attract solitary bees. You will get new residents more quickly if you put the hotel near insect hotspots, like a hedge, flower beds or a pond. To stop it getting too wet, place on a pile of stones or hang on a wall or tree, but no more than about 1.5m off the ground.
