Learning

For schools, families and adults

Our aim is to be a place of welcome and hospitality, offering learning in a safe, secure environment to all comers of all ages who wish to experience something of the wonder and joy to be found in this special place. We would look forward to welcoming you and hosting your school visit in the Minster. To enquire get in touch with Diana via email education@southwellminster.org.uk or call 01636 817816.

Our Schools’ Programme engages thousands of children from Nottinghamshire and beyond each year through our large-scale Time Travelling RE days and Year 6 Festival, while we also offer quieter tailor-made days for smaller groups who might focus on a particular area of the curriculum. To help us to deliver our schools work, we are supported by a large team of wonderful volunteers drawn from across the county. Partner organisations include Southwell Community Archaeology Group, REACH Learning Disability and the Mother’s Union.

Informal family learning has become an integral part of our education offer thanks to the Heritage Lottery Funded project at the Archbishop’s Palace and gardens. We now run several family fun days through the year – a chance for children and their carers to drop in and join in with the fun, which includes themed crafts, games, stories and even Robin Hood and his Merry Outlaws. These special events complement our sessions for families and the children’s trails and guides on offer for free inside the Minster all year round.

The Adult Learning Programme provides year-round opportunities for learning through seasonal lectures, talks, concerts and events, as well as our annual Discovery Day in September, which is a chance to meet staff and volunteers and to find out more about every-day life at the Cathedral. The Theological library is based at Trebeck Hall, from which books may be borrowed, and a Historic Library containing a fabulous collection of books, manuscripts and other treasures to be viewed by appointment.
