Our 14th and final #Southwell140 exhibition object for #June is this...
OSKYTEL THE DRAGON 🐲
This is Oskytel the Dragon. He is named after Bishop Oskytel, who later became the Archbishop of York. In the year 956, The King of Wessex gave Southwell and land around it to Oskytel. There are several damaged carvings in the Chapter House, including dragons. It is thought that theses were destroyed during the occupation of the Minster by Cromwell’s troops during the English Civil Wars. In medieval Europe, dragons were often associated with the Devil. Although we like to think Oskytel is a friendly creature! Oskytel the dragon lives in our beautiful Palace gardens, he keeps them calm and peaceful. Come and visit him this weekend! 🐉

Our penultimate #Southwell140 exhibition object is the
CLAY TOBACCO PIPE 🚭
These pieces of clay smoking pipe were found in Southwell.

Smoking tobacco was a popular pastime when it was brought to England from the Americas at the end of 16th Century. Although tobacco was widely accepted it still had its critics. King James I wrote that tobacco was: “lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the Nose, harmefull to the braine, dangerous to the Lungs..."

A clay pipe has a long tube of white clay with a bowl at the end, which usual has a small heel/spur in order to keep it upright when placed on a table. As clay pipes were prone to breaking and could be easily and cheaply replaced, their remains are littered throughout the country, turning up in fields, gardens, rivers and on building sites. Some carry exquisitely decorative bowls or manufacturers’ marks. Have you ever found any in your garden?🔎

Object number 12 of our #Southwell140 exhibition for June is the:
BARTMANN JUG 🧔‍
The term "Bartmann" translates as "bearded man." Can you see him? This fragment of salt-glazed stoneware is part of a Bartmann Jug. It was found in the garden of the Residence - this is where the Dean of the Cathedral lives. The jug would have been made in Frechen, near Cologne in Germany.

These jugs are also called "Count Bellarmine" and feature a mocking depiction of Catholic cardinal Robert Bellarmine. Bellarmine did not like the rise of Protestantism, which was popular in Germany. He was also took an anti-alcohol stance. It is thought that Dutch and English Protestants may have designed the jugs to ridicule the cardinal.

Our first #Southwell140 object this week is...
CARDINAL WOLSEY✝️

Thomas Wolsey (1473 -1530) was an English Catholic cardinal. This portrait of Cardinal Wolsey hangs in our State Chamber with other famous historical figures.

He became the Archbishop of York and then the Lord Chancellor, Henry VIII’s chief adviser. Wolsey failed to get an annulment for Henry's marriage and fell out of favour with the King. Wolsey was accused of treason and recalled to London by Henry. Luckily for him he died on the way from natural causes.

Wolsey spent his last days in Southwell. He wrote a letter which is embroidered on these cushions in the State Chamber.

PORTRAIT OF CHARLES I 👑
This portrait of Charles I is from the Studio of Van Dyck.
Did you know? King Charles I spent his last night of freedom in Southwell!
He left Oxford and travelled through enemy-held territory to a Scottish army camp located close to Southwell. Charles tried to forge an alliance with Scottish Commissioners but they betrayed him. He was brought to the State Chamber at Southwell Minster before returning to London. He was later executed.

#Didyouknow that Charles I (in disguise) was supposedly refused service by a local shoemaker, who had been forewarned in a dream that this stranger was cursed? 👞

Today's #Southwell140 exhibition object is this special
CHALICE 🍷
Chalices have been used in Christian churches since the early days of Christianity. In the exhibition we have on show a pair of matching chalices; one is from 1663 and its replica is from 1900. The chalice is used to hold wine, which in the Eucharist becomes for us the blood of Christ.

"Do this in remembrance of me." (Luke 22:19)
At the last supper Jesus ate bread and wine and instructed his disciples to do the same in memory of him. This ceremony is called The Eucharist but is also known as Holy Communion or the Lord's Supper.

TORTURA TORTI 📔
Lancelot Andrewes was a Prebendary of North Muskham and served at Southwell Minster. We hold this first edition of his work in our library. It is in its original calf skin binding. It is kept closed to keep it safe.

After the Gunpowder Plot, James I passed stricter measures against Catholics. Catholics had to swear allegiance to the monarch and participate in Church services or be fined! Catholic Cardinal Count Bellarmine argued that it was sinful to make Catholics pledge allegiance in his book Matthaeus Torta. Lancelot Andrewes attacked Bellarmine in Tortura Torti. Our final #Southwell140 object this week is
GENEVA (BREECHES) BIBLE 📖
The Geneva Bible was written in 1560. It was written in English and in a style most ordinary people could understand. It was very popular. It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower!

The Bible is named after the city where it was published by English Protestants who were living in exile. They fled persecution in England during the reign of Queen Mary I who wanted to restore the Catholic faith.

The Geneva Bible earned its nickname because of its translation of Genesis 3:7. It describes Adam and Eve sewing "breeches" for themselves after eating the forbidden fruit.

A CHRONICLE OF THE LATE INTESTINE WAR ⚔️
The book reflects on the events of the English Civil War. Heath supported the King and fled to Holland in exile during the war. There was a great division in society and everyone had to decide to support either Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentarians OR King Charles I. The book is held by our Historic Chapter Library.

THOMAS WREN VERGE 🔱
This verge dates back to 1664. Vergers look after buildings and the people in it, making sure everyone feels welcome. Thomas Wren was the Prebendary, or Canon, of Oxton in 1664 and would have worked at the Minster. A verge was originally used to keep back animals or an overenthusiastic crowd!

PAPAL SEAL 🔖
A papal seal, also known as a papal bull or bulla (which means ‘bubble’ in Latin), is a formal symbol used by the Pope to authenticate official documents. The bulla shows the heads of Saint Peter and Saint Paul on one side and the Pope’s name on the other. Papal seals were made of lead and attached to documents sent by the Pope. Pope Clement VII was the Pope at the time King Henry VIII asked for a divorce.

Our final #Southwell140 object this week is this
Memorial to Archbishop Edwin Sandys
Sandys was the Archbishop of York during the reign of Elizabeth I. He was one of the translators of the Bishops' Bible which became the basis for the King James Bible. This intricate memorial is of alabaster. The carving on the front his family of 9 children mourning his death in 1558. They kneel in order of gender, not of age.

Visit us to learn more about Sandy and what Southwell was like in his lifetime. Visitors can follow the object trail and explore the exhibition. There is something for everyone to do!
