The Education Department ran a craft competition to find the best knitted/sewn/felted/crocheted Green Man or Woman, during Spring 2020. People were invited to create a 'green man' inspired by the incredible and world-renowned medieval carvings in the Minster's Chapter House.
A 'green man' is a face surrounded by leaves and/or flowers, sometimes with leaves growing out from the mouth. (Click on the image to enlarge it.)
During the Spring lockdown, the competition was put on hold, but crafters from around the country worked on their creations and all entries were gathered in the Minster. Currently, the actual carvings cannot be viewed due to essential conservation work which began in June, funded by a substantial grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
It is hoped that this creative endeavour will be enjoyed by visitors and whet their appetite to come back and see the real thing when the Chapter House reopens.
The two winning entries are by Catherine Hewitt's wall hanging and Libby Clark's kitten creation, chosen by our judge, 10-year-old Issac Roberts. He chose the winners for their attention to detail and because of their original design.
